Darner - Aeshna umbrosa

Darner - Aeshna umbrosa
Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail, Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington, USA
October 9, 2009
The Darners were very hard to photograph because they never landed (except when attacking). One mating couple did land, but it was about 25 feet up in a tree, which makes it fairly difficult for macro photography. Luckily, this one got caught in an A. diadematus web. The orb-weaver was not very happy about a prey this large and immediately headed for its retreat.

According to Paulson, the lack of any spots on S10 and the paddle-shaped appenages are diagnostic for Shadow.
