Monarch in fall - Danaus plexippus - male

Monarch in fall - Danaus plexippus - Male
Alameda County, California, USA
October 10, 2009
Way up in neighbor's tree, 11:36 a.m. The morning started with a thick cloud cover, and this butterfly, among others, appeared immediately after the sun came out.

The search shows almost no images for northern California. I don't know why this monarch is here. Shouldn't it have flown south?
