Jumping Spider - Hentzia palmarum - male

Jumping Spider - Hentzia palmarum - Male
Cape May Point, Cape May County, New Jersey, USA
September 21, 2009
I found several of these jumpers in the vegetated back dunes adjacent to Delaware Bay. I have noticed that when I find a new (to me) species of salticid I am often surprised by its small size. One idea I have about my repeated revelation is that with many groups, for example birds, one is accustomed to seeing field guide and other images that are smaller than the real thing. With jumpers just the opposite is true - most images are several orders of magnitude larger than the spider itself. How wee these critters are!!!
