Size: 1/2 inch
On native birch (Betula occidentalis) in my backyard. I've also seen it on several other unrelated plants.

Notice the Argentine Ant (Linepithema humile) in attendance.

I am pretty confident that you are right; no other insect can be mistaken by this one; so I am moving it to the guide.
