Caterpillar - Danaus gilippus

Caterpillar - Danaus gilippus
Fountain Hills, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
October 1, 2009
Size: ca 5 cm
Caterpillar #1 on Desert Milkweed (Asclepias subulata). I assume it is a Queen caterpillar (Danaus gilippus), but it has unusual colors. The typical Queen caterpillars could be seen at the same time on the same plant.

Very interesting photo.
Very interesting photo.
Wagner says for recognition of Queens: "Bold combination of yellow and white over reddish brown to jet black ground." That may explain the red.
