Crab spider - Misumenops

Crab spider - Misumenops
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
March 2, 2006
Size: BL about 3.5 mm
This tiny crab spider was patrolling Sweetbush, first on the flowers, then down on the stem, in Plum Canyon is very early spring. It seems to resemble a paler Misumenops,
bugguide.net/node/view/24420. This is so tiny. Could it be a male?

We would agree Mandy - Misumenops.
These hairy ones seem to be Misumenops, although Lynette just discovered that Misumessus, another hairy crab, has been pulled out into its own genus. Someday we may find a pictorial reference on Misumenops which might allow us to pick out species IDs, or, better yet, an expert might stop by and explain it all to us!

Misumenops
Thanks for the ID to both of you and to Mandy. It's much appreciated!

Misumenops sp.
I think you're right about it being Misumenops. I've just started thinking of them as the hairy crab spiders, although I don't know if they ALL are hairy. I think its an immature male as you can just barely begin to see some swelling at the tips of its palps. From reading comments in the guide I think I've determined that John & Jane Balaban might be more familiar with these. I would wait till they comment. :)
