Spider - Enoplognatha ovata - male

Spider - Enoplognatha ovata - Male
Elkton, Douglas County, Oregon, USA
July 4, 2009
Now I know why the male palps are referred to as boxing gloves. These two fellows were fighting it out for about a minute and a half before one was knocked from the web. I didn't see a female around, and no female showed up to offer the victor hugs and kisses, so I assume they were fighting for this prime piece of real estate (native blackberry).

Thanks for the confirmation and specifics on ovata, G. Great information on description. I haven't seen any with red variations, though there seem to be plenty, all over the yard, with the yellow and black.

In your other photo
the black bar near the posterior end of the abdomen, ventral side, is among the diagnostic features for Enoplognatha ovata, as here: . Also see comments on the dorsal photo in that set. There are three color forms, shown on the species page, and the abdomen on the left side in your photo here looks like the first of the three.
