Which Sand Wasp please.. - Bembix
Brighton, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada
August 22, 2009
I am unsure whether this is Bicyrtes or Bembix. Does not look exactly like either of the previous ones ID'd here. Almost looks as if it has a little of both. Help with ID please.

Bembix
I'm sorry, I should have replied sooner. This is definitely a species of Bembix. They don't have the squared-off edges on the back of the thorax like Bicyrtes does (marked white in that genus, too). Northern specimens and species tend to be much darker than more southerly species and specimens, so the variation here is not surprising.
