Unkown Wasp - Polistes dominula
Enumclaw, Forested Unincorporated King County, Washington, USA
October 11, 2009
Size: 22mm
This one was hovering around low to the ground and landed several times on the beauty bark.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Maybe a European Paper Wasp (Polistes dominulus).
I'm no expert, but the ones we have around Colorado Springs look just like this, and are called a European Paper Wasp (Polistes dominulus).
Actually, we just call them Yellowjackets.

My thought too

Thank you
Thank you Donald and John! After I got your ID I did some research and found out that the queens are the only ones to survive the winter. That's good to know because we'd like to clear off a lot of the nests while they are empty of course. Also, I don't know if anyone is interested in this, but I found it pretty neat. There is an old article in Discover Magazine that had the following article: Cop Wasps vs. Drug Smugglers
