Cockroach? - Tanystoma maculicolle

Cockroach? - Tanystoma maculicolle
Sacramento County, California, USA
October 16, 2009
I cannot find anything that looks quite like this on the web. Maybe a cockroach? They all pretty much look the same, some are a little larger than the one in the photo. They are brown with light brown around the edges and they're backs are not totally smooth they have ridges. Haven't seen any fly. They admit a foul odor when disturbed. I live on 2 acres in a rural area I have seen these a few times outside under bags of soil and wet cardboard before but now they're in my house. We had a real good rain storm this week and all the bugs are out most of I know what they are beetles, wolf spiders, earwigs ect. But since the rain these are all over my porch and getting in my house. Please any idea what they are? Thank You.

ground beetle, rather -- a member of the Tanystoma genus
must be common in your area, but we have very few of its photos in the guide -- so, thanks!
