Had this labeled as a midge, now I am not sure. Could it be a mosquito? species?

A good rule of thumb, from what I hear: mosquitoes often perch with one or more hind legs raised, whereas midges often perch with forelegs raised.

Not sure what kind of mosquito it is, but it doesn't strike me as Toxorhynchites rutilus (elephant mosquito).

I see what you mean re: elephant Mosquito. Reviewing the pix on the guide they all seem to have blue areas on the legs, thorax etc. Thanks for the text on the differences.

Certainly could be but I never could tell the difference between midges and mosquitos. :)
