Striped Bark Scorpion - Centruroides vittatus

Striped Bark Scorpion - Centruroides vittatus
Uvalde, Uvalde County, Texas, USA
October 11, 2005
Some kind of Scorpion. Anyone?

Centruroides vittatus
Family: Buthidae, Centruroides vittatus (Say, 1821)
ID: The pedipalps ("arms") are almost obscuring a very important clue, the "triangle" on the front of the carapace; long, slender appendages, which are noticeably more elongate here than in females; two broad stripes down back, with orange bars on each tergite (dorsal plate); hands and fifth metasoma (tail) segment are darker, especially in young and freshly molted specimens (faint here); broad stripe on the back of the tail (visible here). Specimens from the central Texas Llano Uplift, a large area of pink granite west of Austin and northeast of Uvalde, have beautiful coloration!
Sex: Male (great shot, Jason!)
Distribution: Very common! All of Texas, much of northeastern Mexico, to the southern tier of counties of Nebraska, east to Mississippi embayment, west to foothills of the Rockies (like Las Vegas, New Mexico). Especially common in the limestone Hill Country/Edwards Plateau of central Texas. Hides under rocks and other objects where it often clings to the underside, resulting in common stings to the unwary person picking up objects (wood, lumber, rocks, clothing, etc.). Pest: often enters houses.
Sting Mild neurotoxin, quite painful. Some people might have a severe allergic reaction requiring medical attention.
