I would love to know more about this bug
...it resembles a stick insect. How are they situated on the 'tree of life' in comparison to stick insects?

 
Coincidence
The similarity is largely coincidence. It is no more closely related to stick insects than other grasshoppers are. There is a group of related orders that tend to product long, skinny insects.
