Nicrophorus nigrita Beetle with mites - Nicrophorus nigrita

Nicrophorus nigrita Beetle with mites - Nicrophorus nigrita
Enumclaw, Forested Unincorporated King County, Washington, USA
September 3, 2009
Size: 25mm
I flipped it over for a ventral view and it sort of curled up in defense. It looks like it secreted something from its abdomen also. I don't remember smelling anything 'stinky' when I was there, but maybe I just didn't notice. I was probably too 'in the zone' at the time. Also, you can see some of those mites I was talking about. They just crawled wherever they pleased. They seemed to stick towards the anterior portion of the beetle...so that makes me wonder if they were waiting for the beetle to find food so they could eat too. ??
