Velvet Ant - Dasymutilla

Velvet Ant - Dasymutilla
Mobile (Dog River), Mobile County, Alabama, USA
October 19, 2009
Definitely in genus Timulla. I suspect because of Gulf Coast fauna, it is T. floridensis. Any confirmations or suggestions.

Dasymutilla sp.
Petiolate abdomen, round eyes, mesosoma shape make this Dasymutilla.

Moved from Ants, Bees, Wasps and Sawflies.

Good To Know
George,
I was just looking at the banded abdomen, thinking this one did not look like my other Dasymutilla

Thanks for the early morning education, which I will add to my notebook.
Robert

Happy to help
D. occidentalis is the only "furry" velvet ant in the East. The rest are all pretty much bare (including other genera).
