Unlike the usual case for saddlebags, this one would perch every 3 to 5 minutes.
Usually saddlebags seem to always cruise and never perch.

black saddlebags
per odonatacentral, the gold spots "become obscured except on segment 7." So that probably means that this is a young specimen.

Thanks for checking and passing along the detail.

Maybe being a young one it isn't strong enough to cruise all day yet.
There are a couple of them with extra gold around a small pond.
