European Ground Beetle - Carabus nemoralis

European Ground Beetle - Carabus nemoralis
Enumclaw, Forested Unincorporated King County, Washington, USA
October 3, 2009
Size: 26mm
I would've liked to photograph this large beetle outside in its own habitat, but it kept running away and burying its head in the mud. So I brought it inside. I had it in a jar and it was freaking out so I put it in the refrigerator for a few minutes to see if it would calm down. That slowed it down a little so I opened the jar to let it out on a paper plate and...OHHHhhh! Gag! The odor coming from the bottle was horrendous! There was some brown liquid in the jar also, although that could've just been mud...but yikes...it stunk. I really did gag a few times. I left the jar on the counter with the lid off and I went away and came back and it still stunk pretty bad. I had to try and wash the beetle off before I took photos. Does anybody know what the deal is with the odor? Does it just crap itself as a defense mechanism? If that's the case, I could see that method being a very effective one! Yuck.

LOL!
I just realized that the acronym for "Forested Unincorporated King County" is almost something profane:-)

That's funny
You are very observant! I don't think I would have ever noticed that. lol :)
