Chinese mantis male or female? - Tenodera aridifolia

Chinese mantis male or female? - Tenodera aridifolia
Perry County, Pennsylvania, USA
October 22, 2009
Size: 70 mm
This is the Chinese mantis but is this a female or male? I thought the brown ones were females... Her abdomen was a fraction of the size of the female on my butterfly bush who is gravid (has been there many weeks now, survived below freezing temps in the open, and still has yet to lay her eggs)

This one was spotted flying right past our window. They do not have a whole lot of stamina when it comes to flight!

This seems to be a male becuase of it's thin abdemen.

Sexting mantid?!
What is he in high school now?! : D

Is the thin abdomen the only way to tell male from female?
