Explanation of Names

Range
Holarctic, transcontinental in NA: NF-AK south to SC-AL-TX-CA(1)
Habitat
Gravel/sand pits, pastures, fields, roadsides, gardens, usually on and in wet or damp, muddy soil. Pairs and groups may be seen burrowing together in mud along waterways or ponds during summer and Autumn months.
