Harmonia axyridis? - Harmonia axyridis

Harmonia axyridis? - Harmonia axyridis
Montrose, Laurens County, Georgia, USA
October 19, 2009
Now that I am thoroughly confused, I assume this is a variation of Harmonia...or am I off the mark again? I note that this is one of a few lady beetles that have white at the apex of the pronotum and where the elytra halves meet. Is this a tell-tale marker for this species?

Ahhh...Thank you, V.
At least I'm not a total dunce.

nope, you're not :-)
White in the middle of the face is what really sets H. axyridis apart from A. bipunctata. As you've already noticed, the pattern and color don't mean much for this species! Pronotum is less variable than elytra but not always the same. White in middle of face IS always present. Check info page for Adalia bipunctata for comparitive photos.

Around here
pattern and color go right out the window for this species. In less than four months of just shooting whatever for my experiment, I have seen more variability in this species than I care to think about. I have the feeling I will have to make a separate folder just for Harmonia axyridis.
