Orb weaver, slanted web

Orb weaver, slanted web
Alameda County, California, USA
October 24, 2009
Size: ~0.1 in. (2.5 mm)
This is the first orb weaver I've seen in the yard that wasn't a cross orb weaver or a Zygiella/Parazygiella. Its web looks like a juvenile cross orb weaver's web, no missing sectors, but it's oriented 45° off vertical, so that the upper surface of this particular web faces the (approximately) west-northwestern sky. The web is anchored to low plants. The center of the orb is 9 inches (23 cm) off the ground. The spider is very quick and agile.

Ignore the green tone on legs in these photos. Nearby chard leaves made some white or clear areas photograph green.
