Unknown Millipede? - Armadillidium nasatum

Unknown Millipede? - Armadillidium nasatum
Lake Fairfax Park, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
September 22, 2009
This sort of looks like a millipede but I couldn't find a match in BugGuide. Any help in identification is appreciated.

Hi! This is a pillbug, namely an Armadillidium nasatum.

Pill Bug or Woodlouse
They do have a lot of legs, but they are a far stretch from a millipede. Your cute little bug is actually a Pill Bug or Woodlouse in the Oniscidea suborder. It's actually a Crustacean...yep like the ones in the ocean. They even breath through gills. They are very neat little guys. They pretty much only eat dead or dying plant material. I believe that they actually brought a plant of mine back to life! They were eating the dead parts for a few nights and then miraculously the plant was revived and even greener than before. I like to think it was their doing. :)

Pill Bug
"Enlightening" or "dry", I thank you both for your astute direction. I'd never have tagged this little fellow. I'm leaning toward Armadillidium vulgare based on the pictures.

I agree
Armadillidium vulgare looks like a good ID to me, but I am nowhere near an Isopod expert. My forte is spiders. But I did have an Armadillidium vulgare here at my house and Rod Crawford (a local expert) ID'd it from photos...and yours seems to look just like that one. Rod said the name translates into 'Vulgar Little Armadillo' (which I guess is rather easy to assume based on the name).

a crustacean, rather; look among woodlice

Sorry V
I didn't mean to double ID it after you already had. I took too long on the comment I guess and you posted in the meantime. :)

come on, why apologize???
your comment is both enlightening and warm; mine, dry, abrupt, and formal

They both get the job done, though. :) I wouldn't expect for you to have a lot of time to 'fluff' up the ID's anyways...aren't you one of the few real experts that this site has? I'm sure you have many, many IDs waiting to be performed.

I just noticed...
...this is listed as Lepidoptera. I know it was most likely a mistake, but I couldn't help laughing a little. lol.

good eye, girl. thanks for being so vigilant.
i'm sure you'll become an editor soon and be able to move images to destination pages and otherwise do great job improving the Guide and helping others.
