it was so big...

Hmm
I guess I'll take a stab at it...
It resembles both a Nemesiidae and also a Tarantula (Theraphosidae). I doubt it's a tarantula, so maybe it's a Calisoga sp? California seems to be well endowed with both Calisoga and Aphonopelma (among other large spiders, of course). It appears to me that the 'm' shaped design on the dorsal abdomen is quite possibly a scar or scrape and the setae is missing. I'm not so sure that it should be considered when IDing. But I could be wrong. Without more photos of this beaut, I'm afraid that no one will be able to ID to species. I can tell you that it's not a spider to be afraid of. They can be menacing because of their size, but they are truly more afraid of you than you are of them.

Changed my mind
Probably a tarantula, rather than a Calisoga sp. But I'm not a certified expert or anything, mind you. :)
