Fuzzy bee and orange stuff on goldenrod - Xylocopa virginica - female

Fuzzy bee and orange stuff on goldenrod - Xylocopa virginica - Female
Cape May Point State Park, Cape May County, New Jersey, USA
October 25, 2009
Size: ~2 inches
Nectaring on goldenrod.

In addition to the bee, does anyone know what the orange spots on the goldenrod leaves are? - arthropod-related (gall, transmitted pathogen?) or maybe fungus?

Rust
The orange spots are indeed fungus, a general class of species named "rust". A quick Google image search turned up this page an an example.

Fungus and galls
The midge Asteromyia carbonifera seems to be symbiotic with this kind of fungus. It makes galls in goldenrods where this fungus is present (according to Netta Dorchin). I picked a few galls not far from this plant when we were both in Cape May.
