Our Backyard Friend - Araneus gemmoides

Our Backyard Friend - Araneus gemmoides
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
August 20, 2005
Size: 1.5 - 2 inch leg spread
Found this one hanging out in the garbage stand in the back alley. Very fast moving.

Araneus sp.
I'm not a spider expert but I think this could be the one called cat-faced spider - see guide. The white line on the abdomen crossed by two shallow white "V"s is characteristic.

Cat-faced Spider
You are absolutely right Hannah, this is Araneus gemmoides. In Alberta many people call this the Jewel Spider. This should be moved to the appropriate page. By the way, there is a link under this species to an information page I wrote on this species for the Royal Alberta Museum.

Moving to Guide
The link Terry mentions is on the info page.

Wonderful
Love cats and am pleased that we now have an 8 legged one hanging around. Thanks for your help.
