Old nest and cocoons - Trypoxylon politum

Old nest and cocoons - Trypoxylon politum
Peace Valley Nature Center, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA
October 21, 2009
This nest was on the ground detached from the substratum. It is obviously old; there are two larger exit holes and a couple of smaller ones. The two cocoons corresponding to the large holes were open and empty; the top"lid" of the cocoon has been removed. Some of the remaining cocoons (5) were intact, no wasp nor parasites could have emerged from them. There was only some dusty debris. The other cells were empty.
