Good range of colors in guide now
This is about as un'splendid' as this sp. get - you should also get G. hornii and balyi up there and they are ALWAYS black, sometimes with faint purplish tint underneath. They can be differentiated by the sutural striae complete to base (as opposed to ending midway on the scutellum)

Circumstances?
Was this beetle out taking a stroll, or did you find it under special circumstances?

Posing
I was walking on a dirt trail in a wooded area, and looked down, and noticed this beetle just like you see it in the picture. It didn't move the whole time I was photographing it, and when I left, it was still there. Must have something to do with the cool temps.

Sniffing
Looks like it's in a dung-seeking posture with antennae to the wind.
