Ferruginous carpenter ants and wooly aphids - Camponotus chromaiodes

Size: 10-12 mm
This is the erstwhile Camponotus ferrugineus, now properly called C. chromaiodes. Here they tend wooly aphids on a persimmon twig.

This was a big year for wooly aphids in eastern Missouri, with particularly large numbers of these flying fluff balls evident in early June. See pictures of a wooly aphid here:
