Ladybird Corroboree - Hippodamia convergens

Ladybird Corroboree - Hippodamia convergens
Buffalo Creek, Jefferson County, Colorado, USA
October 18, 2009
Size: 5mm
Anybody know why these aggregate? There were thousands of individuals on the crown of a granite outcrop.

good look at the variations
A nice, clear, large image of some of the many variations of this common species. I especially like how it shows the irregular "extra" markings that are caused by things like damage or disease in the pupa. Those can be confusing because they create unusual or asymmetric patterns, but when individuals are seen together like this you can see how the anatomy doesn't change despite the color/pattern/damage to the wing covers.

converging convergents
sorry - couldn't resist :0)

They congregate, usually at high places (hill tops or mountain tops - depends on what is nearby), to overwinter. They will crawl under and between things like rocks, logs, leaves, etc. Commercial collectors take advantage of this to collect large numbers to sell at places like garden centers. And, of course most usually promptly fly away as soon as you release them.

Other species do similar. Among them, in your area there is a pink one (Coleomegilla maculata) that congregates under debris near streamside, ditches, etc. mostly in low lying areas, and there is a striped one (Paranaemia vittigera) that congregates under leaves and thatch along the margins of marshes.

maybe they knew the snow was coming :-)
Convergent Lady Beetle, Hippodamia convergens i believe.
