tiny caterpillar on wild cherry

tiny caterpillar on wild cherry
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
June 1, 2008
Size: under 5mm
I usually check the cherry tree for insects when walking past and on this day noticed one of the leaves had a section cut out of it. Closer inspection revealed this tiny caterpillar eating away at the leaf.

Moved
Moved from Butterflies and Moths.
I vote for sawfly larva too. Interesting feeding pattern.

Has the eyespot of a sawfly larva
but it's too small for us to be able to say for sure. Others may recognize this, especially since you know it to be feeding on cherry.
