Beetle larva on milkweed - Labidomera clivicollis

Beetle larva on milkweed - Labidomera clivicollis
Schuylkill Nature Center, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
November 1, 2009
Size: 7-8 mm
It looks like a potato beetle larva but it was feeding on milkweed, Asclepias syriaca; at least it was passing frass. I know that some "potato beetles" feed on plants not in the Solanaceae family, but I don't know which species do that.
We have several larvae placed in L. decemlineata, but there are two different kinds, the ones with the head and neck all black like this one and the ones with a red band on the collar. I wonder whether some are misplaced. Compare:

Moved from ID Request.
Aha! Now things make sense. I am pretty sure that this one has only one row of dots. I still have it so I can get a better picture.

The two rows of black spots along the side on Leptinotarsa decimlineata is pretty distinct so they're probably just different color morphs.
