Just curious how identifiable this unlucky fly is based on wing venation... I had the general impression of a large midge / small crane fly before it was chomped to bits.

Moved from Flies. Winter crane fly would certainly make sense (and looks good to me). Moved to Tipulomorpha for now to see if Chen has anything to add.
