Unknown brown spider - Zygiella atrica

Unknown brown spider - Zygiella atrica
Grimsby, Ontario, Canada
November 8, 2009
Size: 1/2 "
This spider was sunning itself at about 1:30 in the afternoon. I didn't see a web near it, so I'm not sure if it's an orbweaver.

Moved tentatively
Moved from Zygiella. Based on known range and coloring I'm moving here for now. Z. nearctica is also in that area.

Moved from ID Request.

Zygiella, maybe
Looks like a Zygiella female in the Araneidae famly of Orb Weavers. I have one in a terrarium that is a spittin' image of this one. But, of course, epigyne photos are always the ultimate determiner.

Possibly Parazygiella
I was going to say Zygiella or Parazygiella. My yard has a population of one or the other, no definitive expert determination yet.

Not sure
I couldn't find a report of Parazygiella in Ontario, so that's why I didn't mention it. Of course I could be wrong...as my literature is very limited. What I do know for sure is that there are definitely Zygiella atrica and Zygiella nearctica in Ontario, both of which are extremely similar looking to this spider. I wish we had an epigyne photo, as that is the only way to determine genus and species.

Epigyne
Hey!
Thanks for the info. I went back to try to take another photo for you, but it's gone into hiding. If I see it again, I will definitely attempt to get an epigyne photo for you.
