Diurnal Firefly - Ellychnia corrusca

Diurnal Firefly - Ellychnia corrusca
Amherst, Massachusetts, USA
April 19, 2004
I saw the posts on the other beetle/firefly images and I thought I would add this one.

I was stumped because it didn't have the luminous abdomen segments...

Moved
Moved from Diurnal Fireflies.

firefly, Ellychnia sp.
I call these guys "burned out embers!"

E. corrusca?
Eric,

While creating the guide for Ellychnia, I found this report that listed the species commonly found in Massachusetts was Ellychnia corrusca, or the "Common Diurnal Firefly"...any thoughts?

E. corrusca "complex"
Tony-

Checking our collection here, your tentative determination is probably as good as you can do- apparently the species in this genus are in need of revision.

cheers,

zack

Looks like a firefly
I just learned tonight as I researched the other images that not all fireflies have light organs (the day fliers)

Day-Fliers
That makes sense then, this one was quite active during the day and flew off after I shot a few pics of it. I've seen a few others during the middle of the day flying around as well.
