it looks like one I found recently, Hyles euphobia, the spurge hawk moth. look here... http://bugguide.net/node/view/32126
it's kind of dark in color like it is preparing to pupate. give it access to dirt or some layers of slightly damp paper towels

after more research in Wagner
after more research in Wagner's new caterpillar book, I now agree that it is hyles gallii. I didn't realize that they both looked so similar, but some of the spots look smaller than on the euphorbias

I checked out your caterpillar which is gorgeous, by the way. My caterpillar guide says that the spurge was introduced into Ontario. Do you think it could have spread to PA? The colors are pretty different and the markings more prominent on yours but maybe there is a lot of variation. Thanks for writing, Mark. I appreciate it.
