Crane Fly on Flower - Toxorhina Crane Fly on Flower - Toxorhina - male

Crane Fly
A male of Toxorhina species. There are only two species of Toxorhina in our area and the way to tell them apart based on the wing venation. There are three common genus of crane flies that will visit flowers, namely Limonia (Geranomyia);Limonia (Geranomyia)and Elephantomyia and Toxorhina. All three groups have elongated rostrum (mouth parts) and are often flower visitors, presumed for the nectars. Among these three groups, Toxorhina is the only genus that the abdomens of these flies are longer than their wings (seen in your images). A very nice shot! - Chen
