Large Strange Bug - Snake Fly? - Corydalus cornutus

Large Strange Bug - Snake Fly? - Corydalus cornutus
Conyers, Rockdale County, Georgia, USA
June 24, 2005
Size: 4"
I saw this large strange bug on the side of the garage. Poked it with a stick to try to get a better picture. It didn't fly well, but awkwardly made it to the bumper of my truck.

The closest thing I could find in the Guide was Snake Fly, although most of those seemed about 1". This thing was very large.

female dobson fly, Corydalus
female dobson fly, Corydalus sp.
nice picture. males have much much larger mandibles to hold the female during mating. very interesting insects
