A stem of wild buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) in my front yard was covered by about a dozen per side of these insect eggs, layered like shingles in single file.

Good guess to simply offer "grasshopper eggs!" These are the eggs of an angular-winged katydid, Microcentrum sp. Good eye to even see them.
