Help with underground grasshopper type thing. - Neoscapteriscus borellii

Help with underground grasshopper type thing. - Neoscapteriscus borellii
Gloucester, Carteret County, North Carolina, USA
November 2, 2009
Size: Around 1"
I found many of these thingies while digging in my garden. They were all living underground (though not deep; maybe only an inch or so from the surface). They were soft. I read that grasshoppers do not go through metamorphosis, but rather do a few grow-and-molt cycles. So is this a soft-shell grasshopper? I don't recall our local grasshoppers having tail spikes or such stunted little wings. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!
Thanks! I thought I'd got it wrong with my soft-shell grasshopper theory. As always, you guys are miracle workers.
