Giant Leopard Moth caterpillar - Hypercompe scribonia

Giant Leopard Moth caterpillar - Hypercompe scribonia
Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA
October 22, 2005
Size: 40 mm approx
I came across this one under a brush pile, where perhaps it was planning to spend the winter. I thought it was worth adding as we don't have another shot showing the orange-red spiracles in addition to the intersegmental rings.

I live in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and it has freaked my husband and myself out to see a caterpiler so hairy, i knew it wasn't a butterfly but who would have guessed it turned into a beautiful moth, wow.

I found one of these at my house. I didn't think they were common for this area. Massachusetts gets pretty cold in the winter!

The range
is described here as Southern New England to Eastern Mexico. Conversely to your observation, I'm surprised they seem to go into winter hibernation so early in FL, where, frankly, it just doesn't get that cold!
