According to the HOSTS caterpillar hostplant database, this is the only Megalopyge specifically reported from wax myrtle, though opercularis is polyphagous and thus can't be ruled out.

I have no clue how to tell them apart, though I saw mention on one image of a "tail" that opercularis has.
