Monarch - Danaus plexippus - male

Monarch - Danaus plexippus - Male
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
October 22, 2005
This individual was very cooperative, hanging around my garden for almost two hours on a sunny, but cooling, afternoon. It was interested in the nectar of my cultivated Frostweed, Verbesina virginica, and it would stop to bask occasionally, wings spread. As others have shown us previously, the scent-scale patches of the male are very prominent. This series shows them from a couple of angles.
