Hymenopteran? - Cimbex americana
Botetourt County, Virginia, USA

This wasp-like insect was perhaps an inch long. The right wing has an odd twist to it, though the left wing looks straight.

Cimbex americana Leach
Not too common in VA. Did not have Botetourt Co. in my 2006 "List of the sawflies . . of Virginia".

Cimbicid
With those clubbed antenna, it is very likely a cimbicid Saw-Fly.(indeed a primitive wasp ).
Probably Cimbex sp. but it seems too jet-black all over to be the Elm Saw-fly Cimbex americana... There is one in the guide, which looks very much like yours, but unfortunately it has not been determined to species level as far as I can tell.
