What kind of spider is this? - Araneus diadematus

What kind of spider is this? - Araneus diadematus
East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
September 22, 2005
Size: larger than quarter
I found this right outside my door building its web in between a tree and a shrub. It seemed to hang out there for about three days or so. It disappeared for about a week then I saw it again. It seems to be out most at night. Can't remember ever seeing it during the day. Any thoughts on what kind it is?
