Size: 1 inch
The kids and I found the caterpillar on the driveway out front. About and inch in length, brown, with two dark spots at the head, and six triangular dark shapes at the tail end (three on each side).

It does seem to be a noctuid... not sure if you'll get any further with these photos.

Armyworm - Cutworm
I think it might be in the Noctua genus. Somebody more expert might be able to tell you more.
