New here and loving it! These fellas seem to have bored into this elm log. They would not hold still long enough for me to get a good pic from the side. I'm real curious to learn more about them. Seen about a dozen of them for couple weeks

Looks like
a Giant Ichneumon. Check out the pictures in the guide.
These are females trying to find larva inside the wood to lay their eggs on.

 
Laying eggs
Yes, and note that behind the wasp is what appears to be the ovipositor of another female, engaged in laying eggs.

Wonder if this species really drills a hole that large for the ovipositor, or if (more likely) it has found an exisitng hole that leads to an insect larva.
