Carabus maeander - Belgrade, Kennebec County, Maine, USA May 11, 2009 Size: 19 mm
Running across state rt. 8 in North Belgrade on bright sunny day. Surrounded by hay fields and second growth mixed woods (red maple, white pine, white ash) and several miles from the closest bog habitat (larch bog listed as habitat in Forest Survey of Maine, Order Coleoptera, Insect Disease Division, Technical Report Number 32, December 1993, by Richard Dearborn and Charlene Donahue). Carabus granulatus not listed in Maine in that report but likely does occur in the state based on multiple records from surrounding states and provinces. I cannot absolutely exclude C. granulatus, but looking at multiple web site images (bugguide, Cedar Creek, University of Alberta, Ground Beetles of Cananda/cbif ) it looks like C. granulatus has an extra raised striation between the most medial row of tubercals and the median suture. Also, C. maeander seems to have fewer, but larger tubercals. However, I don't know what is the "official" differentiation between these two species. 44.5419, -69.7937
Addendum April 2020: Cannot see in this photo - but there are subtle serrations at the margin of the elytral humerus. See comments under Photo#1805388
