minor worker Ant - Camponotus americanus

minor worker Ant - Camponotus americanus
Canton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
October 26, 2005
Size: 6-6.5mm
It looks a little like a Camponotus, but the head is black contrasting with the tan body, and it looks like a saddle between the thorax and the abdomen.

Camponotus cf. americanus - minor worker
The "saddle" effect is due to the lighter colored pronotum.

Camponotus cf. americanus
Thanks for the ID on the ants, Richard. Once I got the name of these, I googled up some pictures, and found that these carpenter ants live in the soil, so they aren't bad pests.
