A cool fly basking in the sun on a desert broom. First thought is that it is a type of Mydas fly.

I agree, its a nice photo
of a beautiful fly. I'd say Mydidae, but I'm heading out of town & don't have time to look beyond. I'll ask Jim Hogue early next week.
