Can anyone identify this beetle? He was quite handsome. Thanks a lot. He was active and it was getting dark so focusing was a problem. Sorry.

Disonycha ? Flea Beetle
It looks like a Flea Bettle. Take a look at Disonycha images on this site. It looks very close .

I'll take a look at the flea
I'll take a look at the flea beetles, Laura. Thanks for responding.

Disonycha species
Anne , I think this fellow mostly resembles this species. Maybe it is an anomaly that Tom Murray and You have found.
I know that in certain species of birds, some aquire a novel look. Collectively their appearance clearly shows that they are of a certain family, but there is an added anomaly that is unique to them and not found within the family. Genetic blurb?
Does this happen with insects I wonder ?

I don't know if it's possible
I don't know if it's possible or not. The colors on this guy are similar to the photos of Disonycha but I got the impression that this beetle was shorter and more convex than the ones shown. I wish I could recall how long he was but I just can't remember. Thanks for looking, though, Laura.

Tom's image of this creature
was recently identified as Calligrapha californica and it looks like a great match to us. We would move these there.

It does look a lot like Tom's
It does look a lot like Tom's photo. Thanks for letting me know.
